Melco TTL/1 Tubeless Tyre Lever – 34″ (870mm)

The tyre lever a lot of fitters learned the trade on, and stuck with. Forged in Sheffield on 20mm alloy steel bar, heat treated and tempered so it has that bit of spring without bending or snapping. The welded lug acts as a fulcrum; a small pip on the flat end sets how far the lever goes into the tyre. Extra depth of purchase past the bead makes it a tubeless lever, so it is not intended for thin-walled tubed tyres where it could nip a tube. Universal from van size upwards. We rarely see one come back. Work in pairs. Once the bead is broken, press the bead out with one lever, hold it in place, then follow round with a second lever. The lug gives you a fulcrum; the pip stops it dropping in too far. Commercial tyre fitters. Also used on MOT shadow boards for checking kingpin and suspension movement. Effectively maintenance-free. Daily use keeps it in condition; if it is left standing, wipe it down with an oily cloth to keep rust off. Nothing needs sharpening. Check for any snags or sharp edges that could tear a tyre, and never weld anything to the lever - the heat alters the steel.
