Melco TCB/1 Mount/Demount Bar, Ball & Claw – 41″ (1040mm)

A mount/demount bar, ball and claw - also known as a walk-round bar. It was used on older manual tyre changing machines: the wheel sat on a post and you worked the bar round by hand, one end lifting the bead and the other turning the tyre off completely. Made on a heavier alloy steel than the forged Sheffield range. The machines it suits have largely been replaced by hydraulic changers, so this is now a very occasional spare. Fit one end under the bead, walk the bar round the wheel to lift the bead, then use the other end to turn the tyre off. Green keepers and agricultural users still running older setting-down / walk-round machines. Effectively maintenance-free. Daily use keeps it in condition; if it is left standing, wipe it down with an oily cloth to keep rust off. Nothing needs sharpening. Check for any snags or sharp edges that could tear a tyre, and never weld anything to the lever - the heat alters the steel.
