Melco BB/0 Bead Breaker with Guard – 20″ (500mm)

A manual bead chisel for breaking the initial seal between tyre bead and wheel rim. Hot forged in Sheffield on 28mm carbon steel with an EVA chisel guard to protect the user's knuckles - introduced after fitters kept striking the wrong end of a TL/50 lever. The bead end is shaped to get behind the rim and into the bead. Struck with a lump hammer. A blunt, purpose-made plate, not a sharp masonry chisel - it is only ever striking rubber. Place the chisel where the tyre bead meets the wheel rim and strike the end with a lump hammer to break the bead, then finish with tyre levers. Commercial tyre fitters, farmers, HGV and agricultural mechanics. Wipe down with an oily cloth if left standing. The chisel face will mushroom over with heavy use, like a cold chisel - dress it back on a grinding wheel. On slide-hammer types check the welds and reinforced ends. Wear eye protection when striking metal on metal.
